Summary/Abstract: The present study examines the problem of the genesis of the Theodosius Golden Gate of Constantinople. Despite the more than a century long discussion in the scientific literature on this issue, the complex study of the preserved written and archaeological data allows to trace the whole process which began with the construction of a triumphal arch dedicated to Theodosius I’s victory over the Goths in 386 when the Emperor also made a triumphal procession. Subsequently, the arch was incorporated into the Anthemius’s wall, becoming one of the main gates of Constantinople, which finally acquired its appearance of Porta aurea during the reign of Theodosius II.
