Martynas Mazvydas’ Gesmes Chriksczoniskas and Lukas Lossius’ Psalmodia

Summary/Abstract: The paper establishes that the words and tunes of at least 24 works contained in Martynas Mazvydas’ hymn book (Karaliaucius, 1566-1570) have significant coincidences with the equivalents in Lossius’ hymnal Psalmodia, hoc est, Cantica sacra veteris ecclesiae selecta (Nürnberg, 1553). Based on this a conclusion is drawn that in his translation Mazvydas most probably used this important Lutheran source. In addition, this paper shows that conducting research on old Lithuanian hymns and their translations requires determining the sources not only of their words but also of their tunes.
