Summary/Abstract: The authors of this paper analysed characteristics of repatriates returning to Hungary with special regard to the process of identity change before, during and after re-migration. Up till now only few researches looked into the identity change of Hungarian repatriates. The analysis was carried out on the basis of Sussman’s cultural identity change model, Hungarian repatriates were listed into four groups. The members of the first, affirmative group were mainly less skilled persons, who could not integrate into the host country, but their reintegra-tion after their return home ran smoother. The integration of the second and third groups: the sub-tractive and the additive groups to the host society was of greater ex-tent, however, they were less in-sistent on the home country than the affirmative returnees, which caused several conflicts during their reinte-gration. Reintegration of the fourth group, the global identity shifters was relatively simple. Differences of reintegration and identity change of different groups of repatriates should be more taken into consider-ation in special programmes and ini-tiatives that support repatriation.
