Summary/Abstract: The overall purpose of this study is to examine the urban–rural or central-peripheral differences by the location of the branches in the Hungarian financial institution network. Accepting the operation of the finan-cial institutions as a basic criterion of the modern economy, the degree of network expansion and the size is dependent on the background of operation. In the research two types of organizational forms have been distinguished: commercial banks with generally global ownership back-ground and the locally established and embedded cooperative credit institutions. The study deals with accessibility and network density anal-yses applied in international litera-ture (Bonaccrosi and Gobbi 2001, Benfratello et al 2005, Conrad et al., 2009, 2005, Burgstaller 2013), as well as with the context to other socio-economic indicators (e.g. unemployment and income data) to point out the differences between the localization practices of commercial banks and co-operative credit institutions.
