Summary/Abstract: The paper critically reassesses the old and new data which may well be used with due foresight for dating the seven Sindbad tales as well as for putting this small collection of tales with its rather ambiguous hero into its proper social and aesthetic context. In doing this literary reassessment the author tries to restrain himself from the pitfalls of modernising which are hard to avoid in the case of such a seemingly modern personage like Sindbad the Sailor.
