Summary/Abstract: Russian Federation sees post-Soviet space as both an area “near abroad”, and its own sphere of influence. It strives to preserve the dominant political and economic role in countries belonging to the area. This applies especially to Ukraine, Moldova and South Caucasus countries. Russian Federation policy is determined historically and geopolitically. These countries are also the subject of potential interest of the European Union which contributes to the creation of a field of rivalry in international relations.
