New Evidence of the Cult of Egyptian Deities in Tyra

Summary/Abstract: The article generalizes and reviews presence of the Egyptian cults (alongwith the Greek cults) in the Ancient Tyra, based on archaeological evidence found on this territory. Analysis of the records (epigraphic inscriptions, artifacts and glyptics) enabled the author to make a conclusion about worshipping to the Egyptian deities Isis, Serapis and Horus-Apollo during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. There probably was a temple to Isis and Serapis in temenos of this polis. Expansion of the Egyptian cults was directly linked to economic and cultural connections of Tyra with the Egyptian Alexandria, West-Pontic polises and neighboring Ancient towns of the North Pont, especially with the Pontic Olbia. The article also contains a short overview of archaeological evidence connected with the cult of the Egyptian gods in the Pontic Olbia and main features of the cult of Serapis and Isis during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
