Reasons for public factor involvement in supporting companies’ innovation

Summary/Abstract: The problem of innovation is strictly connected with the concept of economy based on the knowledge. However, it is very difficult to market and commercialize the knowledge, which constitutes an obstacle for achieving optimal level of R&D investments by private sector. At the same time, in situation of increased operating risk, which is always connected with launching an innovation into the market, the capital structure of company should not include debt because it would additionally increase the level of company’s financial risk. Thus, the economic reasons for public support for innovation activities stem from certain characteristics of innovation and searching for optimal financing structure of small and medium enterprises.
