Summary/Abstract: The present paper is aimed at the analysis of a peculiar syntactic structure of the Old Russian language—the dative absolute construction. The first part of the paper discusses theoretical issues, such as the definition of the absolute construction, the semantics of the dative case, which underlies its application in the Old Russian absolute construction, the opinions concerning the origins of the dative absolute in Old Russian, and the further development of the structure. The second part investigates the uses of the dative absolute in the text of a 14th century Old Russian corpus—the Suzdal Chronicle—as regards its functions (syntactic, discourse and stylistic), its relation to the main clause and the subject of the structure. This study makes it possible to investigate the use of the dative absolute construction in other Old Slavic texts as well.
