The point of view in the literary concept of B.A. Uspensky and M. Drozdy

Summary/Abstract: The present paper addresses the problem of various meanings attached to point of view. The two conceptualisations of point of view (in B. A. Uspenskij’s Poėtika kompozicii and M. Drozda’s “Narrativnye maski russkoj xudozhestvennoj prozy”) are shown to be influenced by different methodological approaches to literary text. This article attempts a reconstruction and comparison of these two conceptualisations. In B. A. Uspenskij’s monograph the category of point of view is differentiated on a number of levels and forms the component of structure of the literary text. The main point of the present article is that in B. A. Uspenskij’s semiotic approach the interpretation comes before the procedure of text segmentation by point of view on all levels. By contrast, in M. Drozda’s monograph the concept of point of view is applied to a description of the mechanism of meaning construction in literary text, illustrated by the analysis of a dozen or so realistic and modern novels.
