Summary/Abstract: So far there have been various interpretations about the function of the Éhešta-/ Éhešti- structure which we come across quite often in Hittite religous ceremonies and festive texts. hešta- has its own cult personel, and stands often in connection with underground deities. From the texts its direct relation with death cult is also evident, which points out that the structure had an important place in the Hittite ritual and underworld believes. Besides some important festivals were celebrated in the Éhešti- structure. The chracteristics of the Éhešti- structure and the qualities of the worshipped gods and goddesses are very important in understanding the function of the structure. Hittite texts give some clues about the architectural features of the structure, which enable us to better understand its particularities. In this study we will give a new interpretation about the function of the structure and its identification by taking into account the attestations of the word in the texts, the previous philological and ethymological studies and also some archeological data.
