Summary/Abstract: Conservatism that emerged in the conflicts of Western history and has been formed in this context is a modern political ideology. This study, laying aside the methodological debate on conservatism, is dealt with conservatism as a separate ideology in the sense of commitment to some basic arguments, assumptions and beliefs at philosophical, social and political level. In this study at first the fundamental philosophical assumptions of conservatism about ‘human’, ‘society’, ‘the state/politics’ and thus promoted and applied social and political arguments will be briefly discussed. In the essential part of the study we will focus on the different traditions of conservative thought encountered in the historical process. In this context, we’ll deal with authoritarian continental conservatism, paternalistic conservatism, liberal Anglo-American conservatism, neoconservatism. These different traditions of thought and articulations reveal the variable nature of conservatism. So there’re different kinds of conservatism. The main focus of the study is to make critical analysis of the nature of conservatism in this context. These considerations also bear important implications for similar discussions in Turkey given the actuality and significance of the concept.
