Summary/Abstract: More often than not, it is not possible to solve some linguistic problems without using certain quantitative, in particular, statistical methods. Quantitative methods can contribute much to the theoretical linguistics. Some specialists in literature (e.g. Z. Cučmarev, A. I. L’aščenko, L. N. Majkov, A. Pletnev, A. N. Pypin, V. P. Semennikov, A. N. Veselovskij) doubted that I. A. Krylov wrote himself all the collection of the letters of the spirits in his journal “Počta Duhov” [Correspondence of Spirits]. At the same time others (e.g. Ja. K. Grot, G. A. Gukovskij, P. V. Sčogolev, etc.) stated that it was I. A. Krylov who wrote all the letters in his journal. So, it is necessary to resort to the methods of mathematical statistics in order to solve the problem of Krylov’s authorship. The goal of the article is to prove or reject the hypothesis of Krylov’s authorship of all parts of the collection of the letters from “Počta Duhov”. The frequency of 25 prepositions is chosen as the features for this quantitative analysis. The first suspect is Radiščev. However, his authorship should be rejected. Basing on the Chi-square criterion we must state on the level of 5% significance, i.e., with the reliability of 95%, that Radiščev did not write any part of the collection of letters of Počta Duhov. It was proved that Krylov surely wrote the Gnom letters, that is, the letters of the dwarfs. However, the letters of the Silfs do not enter the same general sample as the other Krylov’s prose texts. So, it is proved by statistical methods that the Silf letters were not written by Krylov.
