Summary/Abstract: The catalogue of the EU consumer rights has expanded significantly in recent years, strengthening the consumer position in the financial services market. As a result of the implementation of the EU regulations for consumer protection, the amount of information provided by financial institutions has increased much faster than the pace of the assimilation of these information by consumers. A low level of consumer awareness and skills combined with a huge amount of information makes many purchasers of services not able to make proper decisions concerning complex financial products, or to fully exercise the consumer rights. The aim of the article is to assess synthetically the consumer position as well as the effects of strengthening consumer protection (by information) for consumer safety and for the activity of business entities in the financial services market.
