Summary/Abstract: This article examines the origins of Valentine’s Day and traces the history of its evolution from ancient times to the present day. It offers a comparison of the various customs associated with this day in different parts of Europe and the world. Describing in detail the process through which the contemporary rituals surrounding Valentine’s Day were imported into Hungary, the article raises questions concerning the practice of transplanting customs from one culture to another.
