Summary/Abstract: Braid compositions seen in Byzantine manuscripts dating to the Middle Ages have been used for adorning since early times. It is possible to distinguish that braid compositions in manuscripts frequently replicate or resemble formally. This feature shows distinctive character of Byzantine art. This paper peruses examples of braid compositions used frequently in Byzantine illuminated manuscripts. Some examples contain headpieces placed to upper margin in an opening page and consist of complex interlaced compositions take the diagonal shapes repetitively in a geometric form. But some examples separating the texts and consist of "double" or "triple" simple braid types. Moreover in some examples, braid compositions compose combination by floral patterns. In this research, braid patterns are categorized. The manuscripts in this study has been dated from 11th to 15th century.
