Summary/Abstract: The famous painting Battle of Smârdan by Nicolae Grigorescu raised after the Revolution of 1989 a series of controverses. It was said that the painting was damaged, destroyed or stolen piece by piece. Today, art lovers, critics, press, all have the same questions: where is the Battle of Smârdan? Why can’t the artwork be seen? How many Battles of Smârdan has Nicolae Grigorescu painted? These are the issues that we will try to answer in our study.
