Summary/Abstract: The use of new information and communications technology (ICT) by young children is a source of controversy in many countries. It is extremely important to understand the impact of new digital devices (i.e., tablets) on child development. This article explores the occurrence of ICT in the context of child development, learning, and socialization. Specifically, this article focuses on technologies used in early childhood education, including how these new technologies are defined, in what ways they shape childhood (opportunities and threats), their role and potential in early childhood education, as well as the skills that children gain through ICT use. To this end, this article examines both Polish and international literature in the field of psychology and pedagogy regarding the complexity of ICT, the protection of children from the threats of ICT use, and the practical implications of ICT use for parents, teachers, and policy makers.
