Ancient Symbols on the Walls of Belgorod-Dniestrovski Fortress

Summary/Abstract: There is a figure known as Pythagoras’ tetraktis placed on a wall of the medieval fortress in Belgorod-Dniestrovski. The figure dated by the turn of 14th – 15th cc. was meant to play chronometric functions and, therefore, its builders located it according to some specific coordinates fixed for precise determination of deadlines for agricultural cycles. These conclusions highlight the Belgorod tetraktis not only as an architectural element invested with some deep semiotic meanings, but also as a genuine example of symbolic functionalism.
