Summary/Abstract: Expenditure on health care belong to a group of expenditures that grow significantly faster than GDP of the most developed countries. It is expected that the amount of funds allocated for health care will continue to grow. Analysing the determinants of financial sustainability of the health care system in the context of an aging population, one needs to consider two elements: expenditure and revenue side of the financial system. On the expenditure side undoubtedly the costs associated with a greater number of older people and higher unit costs of health benefits for the elderly are increasing. Higher expenses are due to the high costs of treatment at the end of life and long-term costs associated with the chronic diseases – where expenses associated with the chronic diseases arise indirectly from the lengthening of life. On the revenue side the risks to the health care financial system is caused by the decreasing group of professionally active people (in the context of an aging population). However, a deeper analysis of the Polish labour market indicates that we have not yet utilized the all the factors that may allow a reduction of threats.
