The Hegumens of the Putna Monastery. Several Contributions

Summary/Abstract: The present paper discusses various aspects regarding the hegumens of the Putna Monastery from the 16th–18th centuries. First, the author proves that the name of an hegumen was erroneously read from the original document. Then he reproduces the hitherto unpublished text of a Slavonic note in which a hegumen of Putna, Theodore, is mentioned. Thirdly, the author conjectures that the tenures of two hegumens from the first half of the 16th century could be one and the same, due to the synonymy of their names. Finally, the author communicates the name of a new hegumen, Dorotheus. Going anew over some Slavonic notes allowed the author to come up with new data for the biographies of some hegumens, such as Eustatius, who, it turns out, was a hermit for some time before he became the Bishop of Roman, a special occurrence in the ranks of Moldavian hierarchs. Based on a note from a psaltic music book the author formulates the hypothesis that a certain archimandrite Veniamin was an hegumen of Putna. He, together with Bishop Theodosius of Rădăuţi, supposedly accompanied the ruler Ieremia Movilă and his family in their flight to Poland in 1600.
