Summary/Abstract: The author examines features of tactics and armament typical for mercenaries from Scandinavia and Rus’ at Byzantine service, who were mainly used as horse troops. The author also studies the term known as peleki, which was the wide-spread arm among the Varangians, and the Byzantine influence on armament in general.
