Summary/Abstract: Following major political changes at the beginning of the 1990s, Hungarian archaeology has met its most dramatic and formative challenge: cooperating in the newly initiated nationwide motorway construction project. This was a time when, along with the planning and construction of the routes of newly designed motorways, continuous, large surface excavations began in Hungary. During the preceding period between 1961 and 1990 the total length of motorways built measured 360 km. Those works, however, were in no way related to systematic archaeological programs either in the form of preventive or rescue excavations. Building several sections of the approximately 650 km long motorway network constructed between 1990 and 2007, on the other hand, was preceded by more-or-less organised, nationwide preventive and rescue excavations. According to data by the Motorway Company the total length of expressways will reach 1011.5 km by the end of 2007. Archaeological work related to the construction of motorways has been gradually approaching European norms by implementing increasingly sophisticated legal regulations for contractors.
