Summary/Abstract: The study of the postclassical landscape in the central and western provinces of the former Roman Empire became a central issue in the last few decades. Due to the archaeological research now we have a more detailed picture about the transformation of the Roman world, including the changing patterns of the Roman settlement structure. The archaeological research of the fifth-sixth centuries in Western Hungary (part of the Roman Pannonia) revealed mainly cemeteries of the various migrating tribes (like Huns, Goths, Suebs, Langobards). Previous to the large scale excavations of the last decade, there were scarce data on settlements from this period.
