Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The objective of the article is to introduce the reader to the issue of managing risk of construction undertakings from the level of the project portfolio. Design/methodology/approach – Based on research conducted with the use of various publications, the author discusses issues related to managing risks in a multi-project environment, taking into account the specifics of projects executed by civil engineering companies. The empirical part presents a case study containing results of analysis of contract documentation which was completed for the purpose of identifying methods and tools used in risk management by a civil engineering company, related to development of a yacht port network. Findings – The presented case study indicates the consequences related to insufficient level of project maturity which is exhibited in the approach of a company to project risk management which does not consider the risk of conflict of resources between projects. Originality/value – Research concerning management of risks of construction projects mainly focuses on separate investment processes. The competences of civil engineering companies in the scope of managing a project portfolio as well as the ability to manage the risk of projects taking into account their associations as well as the risk of conflict of resources, are very important nowadays for effective execution of a projectbased business activity. The knowledge related to this area has a practical value and can be a reason for implementing rules and methods of risk management with consideration of the specifics of a multi-project environment at civil engineering companies.
