Summary/Abstract: The unique character of jazz lies in its extraordinary adaptation to cultural assimilation. There are two main reasons which promoted such openness bi – cultural (Afro – American and European) origin of jazz and its special functional development. This paper considers the latter aspect. Three main functions are chosen: applied, entertaining and cognitive. Each above functions determined inter – relations of jazz with folklore, popular and classical music.
