Summary/Abstract: After the dissolution of the USSR, Russia still remained the dominant power in Central Asia. However, with the start of the military operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, US military strongly increased its presence in this region. Because of this development, USA intensively interferes with the regional power politics, which mainly in military-security sphere necessarily leads to encounters with the Russian influence. On the case of Kirgizstan, this article aims to illustrate the history and the present situation of Russian-American encounters in the region. The author comes to the conclusion that in the course of Russian-American encounters in Central Asia, several trends of cooperation and confrontation can be observed. These trends are influenced by continuing conflict in Afghanistan, unstable situation in Central Asian states, and also by overall state of Russian-American relations. At present, Russian-American encounters in Kirgizstan, but also in the entire Central Asia, has reached the level of intensive cooperation. This cooperation is to a great extent the result of the common interest in defeating the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan.
