Summary/Abstract: Since the Slovak Republic had come into existence in 1993, the situation in the area of international migration has transformed significantly. The country changed its profile from emigration to transit country. The numbers of migrants changed as well. All types of the immigration flows increased, and the emigration from Slovakia changed its character from politically motivated emigration to labour migration. The study focuses not only on developments in migration flows, but also on creation of Slovak migration policy, its strategic documents and institutions. In this process, our attempts to become a member state of the European Union played significant role. After ten years of the EU membership, European migration policy, as well as, our membership in the Schengen system since 2007 still influences the Slovak migration management.
