The City as Visual Experience in Skateboarding Videos in Cluj and Budapest

Summary/Abstract: The skateboarding subculture has always been associated with video production. With their short films, skaters attempt to convey their experiences in and perception of their surroundings. Due to capitalism, modern cities have become somewhat un-functional, homogeneous and abstract– they constitute the space which skaters aim to reconquer. In my writing I aim to analyze various skateboarding videos filmed in Budapest and Kolozsvár, with great focus on how the filmmakers are working with moving pictures and the extent to which each city appears as a visual experience.
