Summary/Abstract: According to tradition the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistos, one of the oldest alchemical writings, was found by Alexander the Great in his march to Egypt. Historians, however, claim that its origins are in the east, and even that it may have originated in China. The Emerald Tablet text has served for centuries to alchemists throughout the world as a complete philosophy that contains the precise recipe for creation of the philosopher’s stone and the Elixir of Youth, and at the core of this philosophy is the Hermes’s principle of “whatever is above is similar to what is below”. But besides this, the less well-known and no less important are the principles of “everything is good” and “there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed”. In the book The Alchemist, one of the most famous and most popular writers of today, Paulo Coelho consistently follows the principles of this philosophy. Iranian Sufism also developed a whole philosophy based on the emerald light and the emerald tablet, but here it is not about just a simple, small, precious stone, but about the emerald rocks on the mystical Mountain Qaf and even about the emerald cities. The book The Man of Light in Iranian Sufism refutes the basic principles of hermeticism. And although the symbolism used in this philosophy is associated with hermeticism, and although the Iranian Sufis recall Hermesas a spiritual sheikh, this is not hermeticism that does not recognize the divinity of God, but on the contrary.
