Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to indicate how fast the knowledge from different parts of the world is transferred to entities located in Poland. Methodology – The paper uses a method of patent citation „lags” which consists in an analysis of patent documents with the focus on how many years have passed from the moment when a given foreign invention had been filed for patent protection or a given foreign paper had been published up to the moment when they were cited in a patent application of an entity in Poland. The study covers 20 enterprises and 5 universities. It analyses a total of 1899 patent applications concerning protection rights for inventions granted by the UPRP in 2005–2011. Findings – Foreign knowledge takes 16.14 years on average to diffuse in Poland and it is a longer period of time than in the case of domestic knowledge, which is adopted within 12.77 years. Among the stocks of foreign knowledge that are the greatest support for inventiveness in Poland, Japan knowledge diffuses most rapidly whereas American knowledge most slowly. Originality/value – The paper uses a unique database developed by the author which combines patents of individual entities from Poland with the characteristics of patents and publications that the entities covered by the study cited in their patent descriptions.
