Summary/Abstract: In the present article the author argues that both the present and the future of the Caspian Sea oil transport pipelines are not governed mainly by economic reasons, but by a political tug of war between the Russian Federation, on one side and the New Independent States (former Soviet republics) on the other. The author examines the attitudes of and behaviours of all the major political strategic and economic players in the area, and also the major and increasing implication of outside of the area very important political actors – mainly the United States of America and the European Union. A separate part of the article briefly presents the main steps of the evolution of oil extraction industry in the Caspian Sea area, starting with the late stages of the 19th century.
