Summary/Abstract: The present article examines the so called traditional (classic) criteria of statehood, based on the principle of effectiveness – permanent population, defined territory, effective government, ability to enter into relations with other states and independence. Its purpose is to clarify their nature and scope and their place in the contemporary international law.
