Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The main objective of the paper is to examine the relation between the level of a debtor’s self-esteem and credit risk. Design/methodology/approach – The research tools included a questionnaire created for the purpose of the article herein and the questionnaire of SES (self-esteem scale). The correlation was measured by the Pearson linear correlation coefficient and the importance of the correlation was defined as well. Findings – The conclusions drawn from the research say that there exist a statistically irrelevant and vague positive correlation between the level of one’s self-esteem and the result of credit risk assessment. However, collected empirical data and research could not verify positively the hypothesis that high self-esteem guarantees that a given bank will accept the assessed credit risk. Originality/value – The added value of the article is an attempt to undertake research on the correlation between debtors’ self-assessment and the assessment of credit risk made by the banks. This research idea is not often undertaken in professional publications.
