Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the main causes of the konfrontasi – armed conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia, supported by Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, especially in the context of the future of Borneo Island. The article focuses its attention on the meaning and etymology of the term konfrontasi, describes the administrative division and demographic composition of Borneo Island in the beginning of the sixties, as well as presents the most important causes of the outbreak of war, with particular emphasis on the political situation in the former British colony of Sarawak and Brunei.
