Summary/Abstract: On Otherness in Terre des Autres [Of Wind and Sand] by Sylvie Bérard. WithTerre des Autres (2004) or On Wind and Sand in its English version (2009), a novel of speculative science-fiction whose main theme is otherness, Sylvie Bérard stages the confrontation of two totally different civilizations in a space geographically favorable to one civilization only, that of the inhabitants of this planet called Mars II by the humans, Siextl by the dartzls. All the possible steps assumed by a confrontation of this kind are present: the encounter; the attempt to collaborate; the confrontation and the attempt of submission; the attempt of cohabitation. Our intention is to emphasize the forms of manifestation of otherness in Terre des Autres through the structure of the book and the crossed glances on the characters. Several theoretical reference points support our approach, especially those belonging to Denise Jodelet, Magali Uhl and Sylvie Bérard.
