Some Aspects of International Legal Personality in the Works of Ludwik Ehrlich

Summary/Abstract: The article describes views on the concept of international legal personality expressed by Ludwik Ehrlich – prominent Polish scholar in the field of international law. The author has chosen to analyze the following specific issues considering Ehrlich’s opinions in more detail: a comprehensive list of subjects, distinctions between international and other types of legal personality, legal capacity and competence. Much attention has been given to the case concerning the Jurisdiction of the Courts of Danzig in which Ehrlich acted as an ad hoc judge representing Poland. The reasons which explain limited international personality of international organizations have been expounded. The views of Ludwik Ehrlich are valuable not only for Polish science of international law but also to foreign researchers being different from those of other outstanding international lawyers such as Franz von Liszt and Hersh Lauterpacht.
