Summary/Abstract: This paper offers an overview of the sources of Syriac church law that were composed or compiled in Late Antiquity, presented from the point of view of social history. It begins by familiarising the reader with the institutional and cultural development of Syriac Christianity in Late Antiquity, which provides the necessary background for understanding the development of different traditions of church law in Syriac in this period. The introduction also explains how late antique regulations and legal texts were transmitted in later medieval compilations, handbooks and manuscripts. The two following sections focus on the two major Syriac legal traditions, Nestorian and Monophysite. Both sections discuss synodical collections as well as different genres of legal literature that were characteristic for each of the two traditions in Late Antiquity.
