Summary/Abstract: The building sacrifice is well represented in numerous folk cultures throughout the world. While the practice has been traced back up to 2,500 BC, the article argues that the rite is still active today as a result of powerful autosuggestion of the practitioners. Numerous field work data from The Folklore Archive of Moldova and Bucovina is provided to reveal the conviction that sacrifices (consisting in a man’s shadow or a living animal) assure stability to constructions and, at the same time, spare the lives of the new inhabitants.
