ELEMENTS OF THE GOTHIC NOVELS BY VASYL STEFANYK (BASED ON THE NOVELS “BASARABY” AND “SAMA-SAMISKA”)

Summary/Abstract: Gothic literature still is unexplored problem in Ukrainian literary criticism. However, some of the literary works, including the " whimsical prose " , give reasons to talk about the existence of Ukrainian gothic prose , the creative existence feature of which means the combination of European gothic tradition of national folklore and fantastic tendency . Gothic literatue in its evolution has combined the whole complex of genre characteristics and poetical constants, combining the wide range of its unique features, themes and motifs, including the struggle between sacred and infernal, mythologism, horror, mystery, corresponding colours, thematic-motive and figurative level. The article deals with the detailed analysis of the novels "Basaraby" and "Sama-Samiska" by Vasyl Stefanyk. The article includes the analysis of gothic poetics ; in the article has been allocated and systematized the complex of gothic paradigm elements in the relevant texts, has been motivated the folklore elements, the concept of sin, the image of the devil, the implicitly naturalistic as dominant features of the gothic novels by Vasyl Stefanyk "Basaraby" and "SamaSamiska".
