Summary/Abstract: This study looks at the quantitative increase in the number of Hungarian higher education students from the late 1800s until the end of 20th century. The first part of the study covers outlined methodological problems and possibilities; after this, the author analyzes the reasons for the increase and, also, for reductions (women entering higher education, the numerus clausus, the school structure, tertiary sector workers’ children’s requirements, postponing the time of higher education graduation, the level reached via college attendance).
