About the New Standard Edition of the Universal Decimal Classification in Bulgarian Language

Summary/Abstract: The article briefly traces the development and distribution of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) on a global level. A particular emphasis is placed on the future role of the classification as an ontology in the semantic network and the work that is carried out in establishing interactions with other systems for organizing the contents of a library (the Library of Congress Classification, Colon Classification, some national classification systems, thesauruses and controlled lists of subject headings). The article describes the traditions and changes in the application of the UDC in Bulgaria. It further elaborates upon the process of creating the new Bulgarian edition of the UDC and specifies the main changes in the standard abridged edition of the Universal Decimal Classification compared to Decimal Classification Tables of 1985.
