Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper was to demonstrate the differentiation of operating costs of social welfare houses (DPS) in Poland in 2016. The value of coefficient of variation (12.9%) calculated for DPS’s costs confirmed that social welfare houses in Poland differed due to the level of living costs of their inhabitants. Further analysis related the correlation between costs in DPS and other variables describing a level of the economic development of regions. The results showed that high values of costs appear along with the high values of GDP. The comparison between the cost in DPS and average pensions in particular voivodships showed that older people are unable to cover up a half of that cost. It means that in the end the municipalities must incur increasing expenditures by paying for DPS residents. This situation will be getting worse due to an increase in the number of elderly people. There is needed an action that will change the way of financing the stay in social welfare houses.
