Summary/Abstract: Today, each state in its legal regulations should provide for the institutions which guarantee national security. In Poland one of such institutions is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. This is all the more interesting because it was the subject of the recent decisions taken by President Bronislaw Komorowski. In addition, this institution has a long tradition. Therefore, the article is divided into certain components that designate a given historical period. The aim of the article is to present the historical characteristics of the concerned institution and to describe its modern legal regulations. Speaking of the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces one should not forget to take into account the rules of martial law. Therefore, a part of the article was devoted to this kind of emergency.
