The ellipse and the recovery of the antecedent in the discourse

Summary/Abstract: The antecedent is a necessary factor for the recovery, by the reader/listener of the intention that the writer/speaker has in a certain communication situation. The ellipsis, as a textuality/discourse operator, in order not to be a lack, requires from the reader/listener the recovery of the antecedent through an inferential process which is necessary for the discourse coherence. In this article we are trying to show that the ellipsis and the anaphora represent two vital operators for coherence, both of them requiring the antecedent recovery, which also exists in the case of the antecedent of a truthful anaphora. Communication would be impossible unless we supposed there is already some acquired information on the basis of which new information can be introduced. The recovery of the already existing information is related to the reader’s/ listener’s encyclopedic knowledge and to the communication situation. At the end of the article we are trying to show that the conscious renunciation at some essential information is not connected to that discourse rule according to which it is allowed not to say everything and to use the implicit, but to a discourse intention meant to ellipse exactly what should have been considered as new in-formation. In the journalistic context, the ellipsis is neither a lack, nor a recovery or a completion, but pure manipulation.
