Summary/Abstract: The article presents a group of 16 school heads, who were in charge of the Kielce School Directorate between 1864-1915. They were responsible for functioning of elementary schools, Sunday-craft schools as well as supervising private education institutions. Heads were entitled to recruit elementary school teachers and to conduct audits in said units. Education and professional experience of the headmasters in question had a great impact on the condition of the sector. What is more, this paper attempts to elaborate on social backgrounds, seniority at the posts as well as intellectual activity of the Kielce School Directorate headmasters. Effectiveness of Russification activities of these people in the presented political and educational conditions proved, however, to have been insignificant
