Summary/Abstract: The present text was developed within the framework of theevaluation of a practice-oriented study program Social Work. Thecorresponding Bachelor program at the Baden-WürttembergCooperative State University, combines studying at the universitywith a work placement at a social institution. The article dealsessentially with three questions: (1) What is the role of practicalexperience for academic learning? (2) How practical trainingenables and promotes theory building? (3) What are theconsequences for the professional support of the students in theirwork placements? Starting from very fundamental considerationsabout the theory-practice relationship this article attempts todevelop “rules of thumb” for a successful practice guidance.
