Germans in the Past and Today. A Contribution to the Analysis of the Social And Cultural Transformations of the German People in the Lower Silesia From 1945 to Contemporary Times

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to the social, cultural and demographic transformations which determine the presence of the Germans in the Lower Silesia in the period of the highest level of their activity in the 1950’s and in the reality of the Third Republic. The author performs a comparative analysis of four areas of the German activity in both previously mentioned periods: the German education, media, cultural and organisational activity. She identifies the factors which affected the development of the German activity in the 1950’s as well as the changes in this activity which have been occurring in the period of the Third Republic. The author concludes that due to political, social and demographic change, the present condition of the Germans in the Lower Silesia is a reversed image of their situation from the middle of the 20th century.
