Summary/Abstract: The essay attempts to apply the category of romantic irony in the reading of early works of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, with his novel "Pan Walery" in the first place. Although the novelist’s theoretical awareness was rather low, romantic irony had a considerable, and underestimated part to play in his texts: it was namely used as a convenient means of manifesting the awareness of a disparity occurring between romantic entanglements and realistic aspirations, as manifest in many novels of the former half of 19th century.
