Post-Brexit politics of the EU: multiple players in multiple cores?

Summary/Abstract: Considering its impressive political, democratic and economic experience the UK could have represented considerable added value for a better, different and stronger EU. In this context Brexit is an unwanted, but necessary shock to the EU and its member states prompting them to realize that now is the time to go ahead, and rediscover the reasons for the EU’s existence. Along with France and Germany, Italy certainly has all the demographic and economic dimensions to be considered a big EU player. It has the same number of MEPs as the UK (73), just one less than France (74), and has the same number of votes at the Council of the EU, as France, the UK and Germany. Italy is the third biggest eurozone economy and third biggest net contributor to the EU budget, coming after Germany and France, and ahead of the UK. Therefore, despite all its problems, Italy has the capacity, as well as historical and political spirit to be a new protagonist in the European construction. In the new post-Brexit political scenario, in addition to having natural, historical ties with France and Germany, Italy should probably try to strengthen its relations with other countries so as to obtain major influence.
